What is at-home IV therapy and when is it needed?
At-home IV therapy (perfusion) delivers a liquid treatment directly into a vein (intravenous route) or under the skin (subcutaneous route), at a controlled rate. It is prescribed for IV antibiotics in severe infections, rehydration after dehydration or gastroenteritis, parenteral nutrition, pain management and certain iron or vitamin courses. Performed by state-certified nurses (IDE), it avoids a prolonged hospital stay and lets treatment continue at home. SAMU Marrakech handles setup, monitoring and removal of the drip, in coordination with our home nursing service and our at-home injections.
How is an IV drip set up and monitored?
The nurse checks your prescription, prepares the solution under strict aseptic conditions, then inserts the peripheral venous catheter and sets the flow rate per the prescription. During the infusion, they monitor vital signs, the puncture site and any reaction, adjusting the rate if needed. At the end, they remove the line and dispose of equipment in an approved container. For multi-day treatments, we provide scheduled visits to renew the bags and check the line — day or night, including weekends, throughout Marrakech. Every session is documented in a report sent to the doctor.
At-home IV therapy: rehydration, antibiotics and post-hospital follow-up
At-home IV therapy is ideal for continuing IV antibiotic treatment after discharge from CHU Mohammed VI or a private clinic, without occupying a hospital bed. It also enables rapid rehydration for seniors, weakened patients or tourists suffering from dehydration. Our nurses follow the course through to the end, in coordination with your treating doctor. For tourists and expats, our multilingual team (French, Arabic, English) comes to your riad, hotel or villa on presentation of the prescription. If a complication arises, an ambulance can be dispatched without delay.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Every drip requires a medical prescription specifying the product, flow rate and duration. Our nurses check the prescription before setup and follow the prescribing doctor's protocol. Without a prescription, we can coordinate a home doctor consultation.
