Diabetes: managing your care at home in Marrakech
Read: 9 minUpdated: 2026-07-02
In short
Well-monitored diabetes can be managed very well at home in Marrakech. It rests on five pillars: correct insulin injection (site rotation, proper storage), regular blood-glucose monitoring, careful foot care, a suitable diet, and recognising the warning signs (hypoglycaemia, severe hyperglycaemia) that require calling for help. SAMU Marrakech can send a home nurse for injections, patient education and follow-up, 24/7, in French, Arabic and English. Every service comes with a free, transparent quote.
Getting insulin injection right at home
Insulin is effective and safe if a few rules are respected. Rotate injection sites (belly, thighs, arms, buttocks) to avoid lipodystrophy — the lumps under the skin that disrupt absorption. Store insulin in the fridge between 2 and 8 °C; an in-use pen keeps at room temperature, away from heat — an important point during the Marrakech summer, when temperatures often exceed 40 °C. Always check the expiry date and the appearance of the product. Our nurses perform the injection, train the patient and carer in the correct technique, and align timing with meals. See our home nurse service and our dedicated diabetes home care offer.
Monitoring blood glucose accurately
Self-monitoring guides the whole treatment. Wash your hands with warm water before each test, vary the fingers you prick, and record each result with the time and context (fasting, after meals, before bed). A logbook, on paper or in an app, lets your doctor adjust doses. Usual targets are often around 0.80–1.30 g/L fasting and below 1.80 g/L two hours after a meal, but these are personal: follow the values your doctor sets. A nurse can carry out the checks, interpret the trends and alert the doctor if things drift. For regular workups we offer an at-home blood test, with analysis at an accredited partner laboratory.
Foot care: an absolute priority
The diabetic foot is one of the most serious and most preventable complications. Because sensation is reduced, a small wound can go unnoticed and become infected. Inspect your feet every day (soles, between the toes, heels), using a mirror or a relative’s help if needed. Wash them with warm water, dry carefully between the toes, moisturise the skin without applying cream between the toes, and cut nails straight. Wear suitable shoes and never walk barefoot, including on the cool tiles of riads. Any wound, redness or blister that does not heal should be seen quickly: a nurse can provide wound care at home and monitor how it evolves.
Diet and lifestyle in Marrakech
Local cuisine can adapt perfectly to diabetes. Favour wholegrain starches, vegetables, pulses (lentils, chickpeas) and lean proteins, and limit very sweet pastries, juices and sodas. Mint tea is often heavily sweetened: ask for it unsweetened or barely sweetened. Spread carbohydrates across the day rather than concentrating them in one meal. Remember to stay well hydrated, especially in summer, and to adjust doses during physical activity such as a long walk through the Medina. During Ramadan, fasting requires a strict medical adjustment of treatments: talk to your doctor before fasting, and arrange support if needed.
Warning signs: when to call for help
Every person with diabetes and those around them should know two situations. Hypoglycaemia (sweating, trembling, intense hunger, confusion, faintness) requires taking sugar immediately (juice, sugar cubes); if the person loses consciousness or has seizures, it is a life-threatening emergency: call the public SAMU on 141 or Civil Protection on 150. Severe hyperglycaemia (intense thirst, heavy urination, nausea, fruity breath, drowsiness) can progress to a coma and needs prompt medical advice. For home management — injection, rehydration, infusion, a partner doctor’s opinion — SAMU Marrakech is available 24/7; when in doubt about severity, always call the public services first.
